On Monday, authorities responded to the North Berkeley BART station for a report of a man in a wheelchair who had entered the trackway shortly before 3:30 p.m.

The Berkeley Fire Department extricated the patient and took him to Highland Hospital with critical injuries, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Berkeley Scanner.

Just before the collision, Berkeley police had been dispatched to the 1300 block of University Avenue to check on Estes because a person who was concerned about his welfare called BPD, according to emergency dispatches.

Estes was not there when police went to look for him and the emergency call at BART came out while they were trying to find him.
