A man believed to be in his 50s collapsed on the sidewalk and died Tuesday afternoon outside the North Berkeley Safeway, authorities report.

Berkeley police do not believe the death was suspicious at this time.

First responders were called shortly after 2:20 p.m. to Henry Street behind the Safeway located at 1444 Shattuck Place.

A passerby saw the man on the ground struggling to get up and called 911 for help.

The Berkeley Fire Department attempted life-saving efforts but was unsuccessful, BPD said.

The man, who appeared to be homeless and in his late 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A community member saw the Alameda County coroner's van with Berkeley police still at the scene at 4:35 p.m.

The sidewalk area near the stairs leading up to the Safeway parking lot was screened off, she said.

The man's name was not immediately available as of publication time.
