Boy, 13, injured in crash near Berkeley middle school
Berkeley police said they had gotten a report of kids walking or running across the street before the crash.
A driver struck a teenage boy outside a North Berkeley middle school Monday as school was getting out, authorities report.
The boy, 13, did not lose consciousness but sustained a leg injury, according to early reports.
The Berkeley Fire Department rushed him to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland "Code 3," with lights and sirens.
Berkeley police said they had gotten a report of kids walking or running across the street before the crash, which involved a driver in a white SUV.
The driver remained at the scene, police said.
The collision took place on Rose Street between Grant and Josephine streets, near the entrance to Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, at about 3:10 p.m.
"Several fire vehicles and at least two police cars," a Scanner reader reported. "The kids just got out of school."
"I overheard a witness telling the police that she had seen a bunch of kids running around in the street. I had just walked by and I saw no such thing," she said.
On Mondays, school ends at 3:05 p.m., according to the bell schedule.
Police and firefighters responded quickly.
Officers canvassed the neighborhood for camera footage after the victim was taken to the hospital.
The collision took place just a half-block from where a driver struck 78-year-old Benten "Ben" Brown, killing him, nearly two years ago.
