Older pedestrian seriously injured in Berkeley crash
The driver struck the pedestrian at about 50 mph, according to early reports, throwing her 30-40 feet.
A woman in her 80s sustained major injuries Wednesday morning when a driver struck her in North Berkeley, authorities report.
The crash happened at about 10 a.m. in the 1800 block of Hearst Avenue at Grant Street, Berkeley police said in response to a Scanner inquiry.
The driver struck the woman at about 50 mph, according to early reports, throwing her 30-40 feet.

The pedestrian sustained a serious scalp laceration and possible skull fracture, major injuries to her leg and a broken arm, first responders said.
The Berkeley Fire Department rushed her to Highland Hospital for treatment.
A passer-by told The Scanner that Hearst Avenue was blocked off by yellow caution tape for about 50 feet east of the intersection.

A small handcart for groceries remained overturned in the crosswalk after the crash.

According to police, the driver, a San Pablo man in his 60s in a 1995 Toyota T100 truck, remained at the scene "and is cooperating."
After publication, police said the driver, who had been heading east, struck the woman in the eastbound crosswalk.
BPD's Traffic Unit is investigating the collision.
