Alex Goodwin Jr. was killed 10 years ago in Berkeley, gunned down in what police have said was a shooting meant for someone else. He was just 22 years old.

This week, Berkeley police announced a $50,000 reward meant to help close the case.

"Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could be the key," BPD said in a prepared statement. "Even the smallest detail could prove critical."

Goodwin was shot Aug. 18, 2016, just before midnight, right outside his southwest Berkeley home near San Pablo Park.

When officers arrived, Goodwin was breathing but unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital several hours later.

At the time, police said the shooting was "not random," but that Goodwin was not the intended target.

"Ten years later, detectives continue to investigate this case and believe there are individuals who may have information that could help bring those responsible to justice," BPD said this week.

Goodwin's family has kept his memory alive in different ways, painting his mural outside their home, hosting backpack and school supply giveaways, and forming a nonprofit, All Things AyeGee (a nod to Goodwin’s nickname, based on his initials).

"It doesn’t get easier," Goodwin's sister told this reporter, writing then for Berkeleyside, in 2022. "Some days are better than others. There are still days that are really, really bad."

The Berkeley Police Department asks anyone with information about Alex Goodwin Jr.'s death to call the BPD Homicide Unit at 510-981-5741 or the 24-hour non-emergency line at 510-981-5900.
