3 teenage boys arrested after violent street robbery

Berkeley police arrested three teenage boys who chased a man down and attacked him during a robbery Sunday evening, authorities report.
The robbery took place at 7 p.m. at University and San Pablo avenues, police said.

Berkeley police responded swiftly after someone called 911. Officers found the trio a few blocks away, BPD said.
The victim, a Berkeley man in his 40s, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
All three boys are Berkeley residents. They were arrested on suspicion of robbery, police said.
Their names were not released because they are minors.
As of Monday, the man's condition was not immediately available.
Robberies are trending up in Berkeley in 2026
Berkeley has averaged about 13 robberies a month in 2026 but the overall trend seems to be increasing, with 20 in June and 10 already through mid-July.
Overall, the numbers are still down compared to last year: There had been 87 robberies through July 16, according to the most recent BPD data, compared to 97 over the same period in 2025.
Last year appeared to be a historic low for robberies in Berkeley following fewer reports during most of the pandemic.
For many years, Berkeley consistently averaged about a robbery a day before the numbers began to fall.
