A young woman on an electric scooter sustained a head injury this week after a driver struck her in a crosswalk on Sacramento Street, authorities said.

The crash happened Tuesday at about 12:30 p.m. in the southwest crosswalk at Sacramento and Addison streets.

According to Berkeley police, the driver was southbound on Sacramento in a blue Dodge Caravan when she struck the westbound e-scooter rider, resulting in a broadside collision.

According to police, the driver, a 69-year-old Berkeley resident, had the right-of-way and the e-scooter rider should not have been using the crosswalk, according to local traffic laws.

The Berkeley Fire Department rushed the e-scooter rider, a 19-year-old from Port Hueneme, in Ventura County, to Highland Hospital "Code 3," with lights and sirens, according to emergency dispatches.

She was initially unconscious at the scene and then unresponsive for several minutes, but became more alert as time went by, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.

The young woman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to early reports.

No information about her condition was available Wednesday.

Berkeley has seen a troubling spate of serious collisions in the past five weeks, including last week when a driver and motorcycle rider crashed on Sacramento Street at Dwight Way, several blocks from Tuesday's collision.

On March 4, a driver struck a woman in the crosswalk on Ashby Avenue, sending her to Highland Hospital, authorities said.

On March 9, police arrested an e-scooter operator whose passenger sustained serious injuries when they collided with a vehicle at Oxford and Addison streets, according to BPD.

Last Thursday, a driver struck two young people in a Shattuck Avenue crosswalk, sending both of them to Highland Hospital, police said.

And, on Monday night, a driver struck a man in the crosswalk at 10th Street and University Avenue, sending him to Highland, according to BPD.

The most serious of the crashes, according to available information, took place in mid-February when a driver struck Diego Soto, a local father, in a crosswalk near Ashby BART.

As of this week, Soto, who is just 33, remains largely unresponsive, his family told TBS. He has now been moved from Highland Hospital to a long-term care facility.

This story will be updated if additional information becomes available.
