Update: Scooter passenger critical after alleged DUI crash
The electric scooter operator was arrested on suspicion of driving it under the influence, BPD said. The roadway has reopened.
A scooter passenger sustained serious injuries Monday night during a crash in downtown Berkeley, authorities report.
The passenger, a man in his 30s, was not wearing a helmet, authorities said.

Due to the extent of his injuries, Berkeley police called in their Fatal Accident Investigation Team, which handles serious and fatal crashes, to oversee the case.

Police said they got the call a few minutes after 8 p.m. about a driver who had hit a scooter at Addison and Oxford streets.
The scooter rider was found unconscious at the scene but came to while being treated by first responders, according to early reports.
The rider, who is listed in critical condition, was taken "Code 3" to Highland Hospital for treatment.
The driver and scooter operator remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.
The roadway will be closed until further notice.
Update, Tuesday, 12:05 a.m. The person driving the scooter, a 23-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of operating it under the influence, police said.
His name was not immediately available.
The roadway reopened shortly before 11:30 p.m.
