UC Berkeley police: Grizzly Peak gunfire sees 2 men arrested
Officers recovered a gun and other contraband, UCPD said.
UC Berkeley police arrested two men early Sunday morning after getting reports of gunfire on Grizzly Peak Boulevard, authorities report.
The men, whose names were unavailable pending the booking process, were found with methamphetamine and cocaine, the University of California Police Department said in response to a Scanner inquiry.
UCPD said the men were likely firing into the air rather than at each other, or anyone else in the area, based on the initial investigation.
There were no reported injuries.
A reader told TBS her husband heard several gunshots Sunday at about 4 a.m. Later, sirens from police cars racing by woke her up.
Just before 5 a.m., UCPD got a 911 call about two men who were "firing handguns" in the area, police said.
Responding officers found the men and their car on Grizzly Peak Boulevard near UC Berkeley's Signpost 14, authorities said.
The pair was detained with the help of the Berkeley Police Department.
During the detention, police recovered a firearm and other contraband, UCPD said, resulting in the men's arrest on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm and other gun-related crimes, possessing methamphetamine and cocaine, and being armed while in possession of a controlled substance, police said.
There have been five non-injury shootings in Berkeley this year, one more than last year at this time.
