A man died Monday morning after being struck by a train in Berkeley, authorities and community members report.

The fatal collision happened shortly before 11:45 a.m. near Hearst Avenue and Fourth Street, Union Pacific said.

The man was trespassing on the railroad tracks when he was hit, the railroad operator said in a prepared statement.

"The train crew was not hurt, but witnessed the incident and is being offered support," the agency said. "No information is available about the trespasser."

Berkeley police said their dispatchers initially got a call at 11:37 a.m. "that a person had been struck by a train near the University overpass."

Arriving officers found a man deceased at the scene.

Union Pacific police are now handling the investigation.

Just before publication, the Alameda County coroner's office said the man had not been identified.

In early December, 31-year-old Stanley Antonio Gomez died after being struck by a train in the same West Berkeley neighborhood.
