TBS Today, Oct. 28

Still no response from BPD to our weekend request for information about Friday's arrest of a gunfire suspect. We'll keep asking.

In a few minutes, we'll head to tonight's Berkeley City Council meeting, where officials are expected to approve the full encryption of BPD radio transmissions.

This afternoon, we published an op-ed about the subject (written by yours truly) — and mistakenly also sent it by email. We apologize for the double intrusion on your inbox today.

We also spoke with ABC7 for a 6-minute live segment on police encryption. We'll share a link if it gets posted online.

To be clear: Berkeley police encryption will affect our news coverage.

But we are confident our readers will keep sharing tips about incidents of concern, which will give us a leg up.

Other news outlets may be less fortunate, and the broader public will still be left out in the cold.

Our position, in the end: This is simply not the time to restrict access to public information.

Op-Ed: Berkeley should not vote for police secrecy over transparency
Berkeley has a proven track record as a champion for transparency. Will this City Council vote for government secrecy tonight instead?
