In recent days, local residents and advocates have begun to speak out about a push by Berkeley police to make all their radio transmissions private.

Some said they listen to online scanner apps when they hear explosions or see officers nearby. Others point to the importance of public access.

Alternatives to full encryption exist. Will Berkeley police consider them?

Other police agencies in California have found solutions that avoid complete encryption.

Many of you have asked how encryption would affect The Scanner.

We're still collecting our thoughts and plan to share them in the coming days.

In a nutshell, we're fortunate to get community tips, which help inform our reporting. But timely stories on a lot of breaking news would absolutely be impacted.

The council vote is set for next week.
