Police detained four people on the Berkeley-Emeryville border Saturday evening after what's been described as a gun battle on Ashby Avenue.

Berkeley police began getting reports shortly before 5:40 p.m. about gunfire at Ashby Avenue and Seventh Street, near the freeway in West Berkeley.

While they were investigating those reports, officers in Emeryville responded to a traffic collision and ultimately detained four people, two males and two females, at 67th and Hollis streets.

A worker in the neighborhood told The Scanner she went outside to investigate after hearing tires squealing and the sound of a car crash on the block.

Out in the street, she saw a man yelling at several people about hitting his car.

She said he tried to grab one member of the group to stop them from leaving, but they were able to get away.

The Scanner arrived shortly before 6 p.m. to find officers from the Emeryville and Berkeley police departments, who had detained several people.

Emeryville police said at least some of the suspects were juveniles.

Police conducted in-field show-ups to determine if witnesses could identify any of the suspects and searched the area for evidence related to the shooting.

The California Highway Patrol closed the Ashby Avenue onramp to Interstate 80 during the investigation.

Authorities reopened the freeway shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, according to the CHP Oakland feed on X.

Berkeley police ultimately confirmed they had received multiple calls Saturday about the occupants of two vehicles exchanging gunfire on Ashby Avenue near Seventh Street.

Details about possible arrests related to the shooting remained unavailable as of 11 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
