A woman drove into the San Francisco Bay in West Berkeley last week, resulting in a medical evaluation, authorities report.

On Thursday night, Berkeley police and firefighters were dispatched to the Berkeley Marina to investigate reports of a driver in the water near Skates on the Bay.

Multiple people called 911 to report the car in the water just before 7 p.m., according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.

Witnesses said a woman in her 40s had gotten out of the car and began walking eastbound on University Avenue, leaving the car submerged, authorities said.

Berkeley police and firefighters contacted the woman and made sure no one else was in the vehicle.

The Berkeley Fire Department also sent rescue divers to ensure that was the case.

The woman was taken for a medical evaluation after speaking with local first responders, according to radio traffic.

The vehicle was later towed from the water.

Update, Aug. 30: After publication, we learned a bit more from a reader.

They said their son and his friend had been taking a break during a bike ride at the Berkeley Marina when they "heard the car, turned and watched as the car hit a rock and flew into the bay."

They started yelling to the driver "but she was knocked out and not responding. He jumped in and … swam to the car."

She ultimately came to and he was able to force open her car door to help her get out to safety.
