A man with a gunshot wound drove himself to a Berkeley hospital seeking emergency medical care Friday night, according to early reports.

The man, who had been shot in the face, was rushed to Highland Hospital, the regional trauma center in Oakland, for treatment, according to radio dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.

Berkeley police and firefighters were dispatched to Alta Bates Hospital on Ashby Avenue after the man showed up there at about 8:10 p.m.

At the hospital, authorities also found the man's car, struck by gunfire with a bloodied driver's seat and shattered window.

The Audi was registered to an address in Contra Costa County, according to radio traffic.

The man, who is in his late 30s, was sitting in the car when someone walked up and shot him, according to early reports.

He managed to drive himself to the hospital, more than a mile away, and was conscious and alert at the scene, authorities said.

There were early indications that the shooting took place just over the South Berkeley border, at 63rd and Baker streets in North Oakland.

As of publication time, Oakland police were responding to join the investigation.

The Scanner will ask OPD for any information it can provide.
