An individual was pronounced dead in Berkeley on Friday morning after being hit by a BART train, authorities report.

BART said the individual entered the trackway at about 6:30 a.m. and was struck on the northbound tracks not far from the North Berkeley station.

The Alameda County coroner's office is working to identify the decedent, BART said. No foul play is suspected.

The Berkeley Fire Department was dispatched to the scene and located a BART train stopped on the tracks north of Hopkins Street.

They found the deceased individual near the BART tunnel, not under a train, at about 7 a.m., according to radio traffic reviewed by The Scanner.

The Scanner has asked the coroner's office for additional information and will update this story if it becomes available.

BART said its trains shared a track during Friday's incident, "causing delays. Normal service was restored at 9:15 a.m."

It's the second time something like this happened in Berkeley just this week.

On Monday morning, a woman was taken to the hospital after possibly being struck by a BART train in North Berkeley.

Berkeley firefighters found the woman at the North Berkeley station under the first train car, breathing but unresponsive, according to radio traffic.

The woman survived the initial crash but her condition was not available Friday.
