A man who stole more than $4,000 in jackets from the Berkeley REI this week has been charged with multiple felonies, according to court papers.

Jeffrey Harrelson, 38, was also charged with two other commercial burglaries at the Berkeley REI, from December and January, according to court records and police.

On Monday, Berkeley police said Harrelson stole 15 jackets from REI, worth an estimated $4,250, then fled the scene at about 4:45 p.m.

Officers were able to find him near International Boulevard and Hegenberger Road in Oakland and recovered the stolen property, BPD said.

With property crime on the rise in recent years, the Berkeley Police Department has been doing more proactive work to curtail the trend.

Harrelson (no address) had burglary tools with him when he was arrested, police said.

Police also linked Harrelson to the theft of 10 jackets, valued at about $4,000, from the Berkeley REI on Dec. 23, 2023, and the theft of 12 jackets, valued at about $3,200, from the Berkeley REI on Jan. 22, BPD said shortly after publication.

The Alameda County DA's office charged him Wednesday with commercial burglary and grand theft, both felonies, on Dec. 23, 2023, Jan. 22 and May 20, according to court papers.

All three charges include the aggravating circumstance that he took items of great monetary value, according to charging records.

Harrelson remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail, according to booking records. No bail amount was listed.

He is scheduled to enter a plea June 4 at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
