A woman was taken to the hospital Thursday morning after a man stabbed her in the stomach while they were walking in Berkeley, police report.

The incident happened in the 1700 block of University Avenue just before 8:15 a.m., Berkeley police said.

A reader who saw "Five or so police cars with lights on at the motel on the north side of University between McGee and Grant," and yellow police tape up, asked The Scanner to learn more.

The man and woman, who is in her 40s, had been walking on the sidewalk when the man "just turned and stabbed" the woman in the stomach, BPD said.

The man fled after the stabbing and has not been located.

As of Thursday afternoon, the woman was in stable condition at Highland Hospital, Berkeley police said.

Authorities said the man and woman knew each other prior to the stabbing but declined to share additional details due to the ongoing investigation.
