All in a day: Catalytic converter theft, robbery, stabbing
Police arrested three people in two separate incidents and investigated an afternoon stabbing.
Flock cameras helped police find catalytic converter suspects, a mail carrier was robbed and a man was stabbed in Berkeley on Saturday.
At 7:15 a.m., a local man called Berkeley police to report that he was watching someone steal his catalytic converter in the 1600 block of Shattuck Avenue.
He said the suspects were getting into a blue sedan with distinctive markings. The man took a picture of the car, which police were able to locate using the Flock camera license plate database, BPD said.
Officers found the car near University and San Pablo avenues and "flooded the area," pulling the driver over, police said.
Inside the car, police found two catalytic converters, reciprocating saws and other burglary tools, as well as methamphetamine, authorities said.
They arrested Jeffery Bulkin of Oakland and Joshua Anderson, who has no fixed address, on suspicion of grand theft, conspiracy and other crimes, according to booking records.
Anderson, 39, is being held on $55,000 bail and Bulkin, 46, is being held on $50,000 bail, according to jail records.
Both are set for arraignment Thursday at Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
Mail carrier dispute leads to robbery arrest
Several hours later, at about 11:40 a.m., police said a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier called 911 to report a conflict with a local resident over some packages.
The mail carrier said the resident, later identified as 55-year-old Dennis Kim of Berkeley, began arguing with him because he was upset about getting someone else's mail in the 1500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, police said.
A "scuffle ensued" as Kim took the packages — which belonged to someone else — back from the mail truck, police said.
BPD ultimately arrested him on suspicion of robbery. He has since posted bail.
Man stabbed near Berkeley-Oakland border
Berkeley police are also investigating a stabbing that took place Saturday afternoon.
A 39-year-old Berkeley man walked into Alta Bates Hospital just before 3 p.m. with a stab wound to his midsection.
Police determined the incident happened on Shattuck Avenue near the Oakland border.
The man was taken to a local trauma center and was in stable condition, police said.
