A driver spooked a scooter rider near UC Berkeley on Tuesday evening, brandishing a gun and threatening to kill him, authorities report.

The incident happened shortly after 5 p.m. near Bancroft Way and Telegraph Avenue, right by the UC Berkeley campus, Berkeley police said.

According to police, the scooter rider was using the bike lane to make his way toward campus when the driver waved a pistol at him and threatened to kill him.

The driver was in a blue Jeep Cherokee with California plates and was described as a white man, 50-60 years old with a thin build, wearing a green T-shirt and sunglasses.

There was also a white woman in the car, 40-50 years old with a heavy build, Berkeley police said.

The victim took refuge on the UC Berkeley campus and called police.

Authorities did not immediately know his age or whether he was a student.

Berkeley and UC Berkeley police officers searched the area but were unable to find the Jeep.
