Update: UC Berkeley student, 20, critical after Friday crash
The crash took place at about 10:10 p.m. when a driver struck a young man crossing the street, according to preliminary reports.
Berkeley police have closed Telegraph Avenue between Derby and Parker streets for a collision that sent a young man to the hospital Friday night, according to early reports.
Police sent an advisory at about 10:40 p.m. asking people to avoid the area due to the road closure and investigation.
"There is no vehicle or pedestrian access at this time. Please use alternative routes," police said.
The crash took place at about 10:10 p.m. when a driver struck a young man crossing Telegraph at Carleton Street, according to police and public records.
Limited details were available due to the ongoing investigation.
The police department's Fatal Accident Investigation Team, which handles serious collisions as well as fatal ones, was called in to handle the case.
The pedestrian was described as a young man, possibly 20, who lost consciousness due to the collision, according to initial reports.
He was struck by a vehicle going 25-30 mph and sustained "significant injuries."
He was rushed to Highland Hospital "Code 3," with lights and sirens.
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
Update, 1:33 a.m. Police said the pedestrian appeared to have been using a crosswalk when a driver hit him on Telegraph Avenue on Friday night, according to the initial investigation.
Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The roadway reopened at about 1:30 a.m.
Update, Sept. 26: BPD provided the following statement. It appears below in full and confirmed that the pedestrian is a UC Berkeley student.
On September 25th at about 10:09 pm, officers responded to the intersection of Telegraph Avenue and Carleton Street for a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
When officers arrived, they learned that a pedestrian was crossing Telegraph Avenue (at Carleton Street) when they were struck by a southbound vehicle.
The pedestrian (a 20-year-old man) was transported to a local trauma hospital and is in critical but stable condition. The driver (a 64-year-old Oakland woman) remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Because of the severity of the collision, the Departments Fatal Accident Investigation Team is handling the investigation. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor.
