Update, May 30: A man who appeared to have a gunshot wound when he was discovered in distress on a sidewalk last week had in fact sustained numerous serious injuries as the result of a fall from a five-story building, authorities have determined.

The man was in an altered state and was experiencing a mental health crisis when first responders found him, authorities said. As of this week, he remains in the hospital for ongoing treatment.
Original: Berkeley police detectives are investigating this week how a man found Monday morning on an Adeline Street sidewalk had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.
As of publication time, details remained slim.
According to dispatch recordings reviewed by The Berkeley Scanner, someone called the emergency communications center shortly before 7 a.m. Monday to ask for help for a man in his 40s who said he was having an asthma attack.
The man had been found lying on the sidewalk in front of Harriet Tubman Terrace at 2870 Adeline St., near Oregon Street, in South Berkeley.
When the Berkeley Fire Department arrived, they realized the man had been shot, according to dispatch recordings.
BFD rushed the man to Highland Hospital for a gunshot wound to the left leg and police were dispatched to the hospital as well as Adeline Street to begin their investigation.
The man told first responders the shooting had not happened in front of Harriet Tubman.
His condition was not available as of publication time.
Police are still working to determine what unfolded prior to the shooting and exactly where it took place.
The investigation remains open and no further details were released Tuesday.
Prior to Monday, Berkeley had had at least 10 shootings in the city in 2023, wounding three people. None had been fatal.
