Original story, Nov. 4: A man was found deceased at People’s Park in the Southside neighborhood near UC Berkeley on Friday afternoon, authorities and community members report.
The man was found unresponsive in a tent shortly before 2 p.m., the University of California Police Department told The Berkeley Scanner.
Someone from the Homeless Action Center reported the body to authorities, the Berkeley Fire Department said.
Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The man was middle-aged and appeared to have been dead for at least a couple of days.
There were no immediate signs of foul play, according to authorities.
The man's name won't be released until his family is notified, UCPD said.
Police activity focused on the southeast corner of the park, near Dwight Way and Bowditch Street.
UCPD officers were still in the area when The Berkeley Scanner went to the scene, but they left at about 4:20 p.m. No park residents remained in the immediate area at that time.
Community members inside the park to the north said they were unaware a man had died.
Community members to the west said they knew someone had passed but did not know the man directly.
The Berkeley Scanner will share additional information if it becomes available.
