A man was taken to the hospital Tuesday after his car flipped over during a collision in downtown Berkeley, authorities report.

Berkeley firefighters had to cut the man out of his black Toyota at the scene.

The crash, which also involved a black Honda, took place at Dwight Way near Milvia Street at about 3:40 p.m.

Firefighters were initially dispatched to an extrication assignment, with a vehicle "flipped on its head" and possibly two patients, according to emergency dispatches.

When they arrived to the 2000 block of Dwight, they found one person trapped in the car.

Firefighters had to remove the car door using spreaders and cutters, similar to the rescue tool known as Jaws of Life, to get the patient out of the Toyota.

Tuesday's crash appears to have been a relatively slow-speed collision, despite the dramatic outcome, according to the initial investigation.

The man, who is in his 40s, had moderate injuries and was taken to Highland Hospital, the regional trauma center, according to preliminary reports.

The driver of the other vehicle, a man in 80s, remained at the scene.

There were no immediate reports of other injuries.
