The man, who appeared to be in his early 20s, was conscious at the scene, according to early reports.

Several vehicles and an apartment building were also hit, Berkeley police said.

The call came out shortly before 11 p.m. in the 3200 block of Idaho Street, authorities said.

"I've sent gunshot reports to you in the past," a reader said, "but it was never this many shots."

The Berkeley Fire Department took the patient to Highland Hospital "Code 3" (with lights and sirens) just after 11:10 p.m., according to radio dispatches.

As of 12:10 a.m. Friday, Berkeley police remained at the scene collecting evidence.
