A man was taken to Highland Hospital on Monday night after a driver struck him in a West Berkeley crosswalk, authorities report.

The collision took place at 10th Street and University Avenue at about 10:05 p.m., Berkeley police said.

The Berkeley Fire Department found the pedestrian, a man in his 50s, down in the street when they arrived.

According to initial reports, he was walking in the crosswalk when a driver hit him at about 35 mph.

The man hit the windshield and flew 10 feet into the air, witnesses told first responders.

BFD took the man to Highland Hospital, the regional trauma center, at about 10:20 p.m.

The driver remained at the scene, police said. There were no immediate signs of impairment.

Westbound University Avenue was closed between San Pablo Avenue and Ninth Street after the crash.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Update, 10:50 p.m. The roadway has reopened.
