A man was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon in North Berkeley after a passer-by noticed he might need help and asked authorities to check on him.

The witness called police just before 2:45 p.m. after seeing the man next to the Ohlone Greenway at Northside Avenue, south of Gilman Street, with a red sleeping bag and several other personal items.

When Berkeley police and firefighters got to the scene, they determined that the man was unresponsive, BPD said in response to a Scanner inquiry. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The Berkeley Fire Department pronounced the man dead a few minutes later, according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Berkeley Scanner.

TBS has asked the coroner's office to share the man's identity. This story will be updated when that information becomes available.

A small stretch of the Ohlone Greenway was closed until the Alameda County coroner's office came to collect the body, which happened shortly after 5 p.m.

Cyclists and pedestrians were diverted onto Northside Avenue just east of the greenway until the busy pathway reopened.
