UCPD investigates gunfire, sex crime in UC Berkeley parking lot
Suspect Wilson Argueta Urbina, 26, of Oakland was arrested last week, records show.
UC Berkeley police have made an arrest in a shooting investigation — with robbery and sex crime allegations — in the Lawrence Hall of Science parking lot in January.
The incident began late Jan. 6 as a group hangout arranged on Facebook, according to court papers.
Suspect Wilson Argueta Urbina, 26, of Oakland was the driver that night, the University of California Police Department wrote in court papers. Two men and two women took part.
After picking up the women in San Francisco, the group went to Twin Peaks and Treasure Island before ending up in the Lawrence Hall of Science parking lot in the Berkeley Hills.
On Treasure Island, the group drank alcohol and an argument broke out when one of the women said something Argueta didn't like, UCPD wrote.
During that conflict, according to police, Argueta pushed one of the women and pointed a gun at the other woman's head. She hid behind a car in fear, police wrote.
The group then went up to the LHS parking lot where, according to police, Argueta sexually assaulted one of the women in his car until she "blacked out."
She ended up with a broken nose, police wrote, but did not remember how she got it.
Police say Argueta then dragged the woman out of the car and refused to let her get her cellphone or purse.
Argueta then drove off with his friend, telling the women he didn't care how they got home, according to police.
As he left shortly after 3:10 a.m. Jan. 7, UCPD wrote, Argueta "fired several gunshots out his window" into the air.
At the time of the incident, the women did not know Argueta's name, police wrote.
UCPD worked to identify him through witness statements, surveillance footage, the Flock camera system and his license plate, among other records, they wrote.
UCPD ultimately located Argueta and arrested him last week.
As of this week, he is no longer in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
Berkeley has had three non-injury shootings in 2026. As of this time last year, there had also been three.
