Man struck by driver in Berkeley crosswalk, taken to Highland
When Berkeley police and firefighters arrived, the pedestrian was bleeding from the head but conscious.
A man in his 60s was rushed to Highland Hospital on Saturday night after a driver struck him in a crosswalk at one of Berkeley's busiest intersections, according to police and community reports.
The collision happened just before 7:15 p.m. at San Pablo and Ashby avenues.
When Berkeley police and firefighters arrived, the pedestrian was bleeding from the head but conscious.
"He was trying to get up but was told to lay back down," a dispatcher advised firefighters over the radio.
The man said he had been in the crosswalk when a driver in an SUV struck him at approximately 35 mph, according to initial, unconfirmed reports.
"The patient does not recall getting hit," first responders advised over the radio. "He's got trauma to the right side of his head."

The driver remained at the scene after the crash, which appeared to have happened on northbound San Pablo just south of Ashby, according to initial reports.
