The crash report came in at 5 p.m., authorities said.

The resident, a 76-year-old Berkeley man, was alone in his car when he crashed into a tree at Santa Barbara Road while heading uphill on Marin, authorities said.

The Berkeley Fire Department had to extricate the driver using a hydraulic rescue tool called "Jaws of Life," according to reports from the scene.

The man was disoriented and confused at the scene but was able to speak with first responders who got him out of his car.

The man sustained injuries that appeared to be minor, Berkeley police said.

He was taken to Highland Hospital for treatment.
