Female pedestrian, 95, critical after Berkeley crash
Police said the woman had been in the crosswalk on the west side of the intersection when the driver hit her.
An elderly woman was knocked unconscious Monday night when a driver struck her in a Berkeley crosswalk, according to early reports.
The crash took place just before 5:15 p.m. at Walnut and Cedar streets in North Berkeley.
A Scanner reader passing through the area said the intersection had been blocked off by a half-dozen police cars, with officers measuring in the street.
Police said the woman had been in the crosswalk on the west side of the intersection when the northbound driver, a man in his 30s, struck her while turning left onto Cedar from Walnut.
The 95-year-old woman initially lost consciousness but came to after the crash, allowing first responders to speak with her, according to radio dispatches.
Berkeley Fire rushed her to Highland Hospital "Code 3" for treatment.
She was listed in critical but stable condition, Berkeley police said.
Police said the driver remained at the scene and impairment did not seem to have been a factor.
