Abandoned building catches fire in northwest Berkeley

Authorities have asked community members to avoid Gilman Street at Second Street due to a building that caught fire shortly before 4 a.m.

The Scanner has asked the Berkeley Fire Department for information.

According to emergency dispatches, a building in the same area caught fire two months ago.

The property is located south of Gilman Street at Second Street, authorities reported over the radio.

Arriving crews found fire close to the railroad tracks, on the east side of the property, and forced open a gate for access, according to emergency dispatches.

As of about 5 a.m., firefighters said they had "the majority of the fire knocked down."

Update, 5:25 a.m. The area was "open to all traffic" as of about 5:20 a.m., authorities announced.

Update, Dec. 24: BFD provided the following update. It appears below in full.

"Berkeley Fire received reports of a structure fire at 3:55 a.m. in the area of Second Street and Gilman. Fire crews arrived to find a large commercial building on fire. This building has been vacant for quite some time. Fire was extinguished with no injuries to civilians or firefighters. Investigation is in progress."
