Scooter crash fatality ID'd as Jorge Velazquez Sosa, 34
The police investigation is underway.
A man was pronounced dead Saturday night in Berkeley after what appears to have been a solo scooter crash, authorities report.
A community member heard the collision and went outside to find a man on the ground sometime before 8:30 p.m., Berkeley police said in response to a Scanner inquiry.
Police found the man on California Street near Addison Street. He was unresponsive and had no pulse, according to early reports.
Officers performed life-saving measures until firefighters arrived.
They pronounced the man dead at the scene.

BPD's Fatal Accident Investigation Team and the coroner's office have been called out.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
Update, Dec. 15: The man who died in the scooter crash was identified as Jorge Eduardo Velazquez Sosa, 34, of Oakland.

On December 13, 2025, at about 8:30 pm, a 34-year-old Oakland man was riding a Segway e-scooter southbound on the 2100 block of California Street when he collided with a parked vehicle — causing a head injury. When officers arrived at the scene, they initiated life-saving measures until relieved by the Berkeley Fire Department. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Because of the severity of the collision, our Departments Fatal Accident Investigation Team is handling the investigation. This case remains under investigation.
The man did not appear to have been wearing a helmet.
