Cyclist dead after Telegraph Avenue crash in Berkeley
Berkeley police have now taped off the block for an investigation and called in the Fatal Accident Investigation Team.
A cyclist died Saturday in a crash on Telegraph Avenue near UC Berkeley, authorities report.
The collision happened shortly before 3 p.m. on Telegraph Avenue at Haste Street.
The cyclist was heading south against traffic when he attempted to squeeze between the curb and a northbound pickup truck, BPD said. He wobbled and fell off the bike, at which point the driver hit him.
Berkeley police have now taped off the area for an investigation and called in the department's Fatal Accident Investigation Team.
Witnesses said the cyclist was neither conscious nor breathing at the scene, according to radio dispatches reviewed by The Scanner. The driver remained at the scene.
Berkeley medics performed CPR on the patient, a man in his 60s, en route to Highland Hospital.
He had sustained a skull fracture and it was unknown whether he was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Telegraph Avenue is now closed from Dwight Way to Haste Street for the investigation. Haste is closed from Bowditch Street to Dana Street.
Saturday's crash was the fourth fatal traffic collision in Berkeley involving a cyclist or pedestrian this year.
In January, Elise Lusk, 66, died after a driver struck her while she was walking to her car near Monterey Market in North Berkeley.
In July, pedestrian Roderick Nared, 67, died at the hospital after a driver hit him on Claremont Avenue.
In August, 75-year-old Dinh Le died after a driver struck him on his evening stroll near Willard Park.
