Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy from Pinole who spent several days in Berkeley stealing cars and evading officers who tried to stop him, authorities report.

We have the scoop.

Berkeley police arrest boy, 14, after bizarre auto crime spree
He racked up more than a dozen auto crimes in Berkeley in less than three days, Berkeley police said in response to a Scanner inquiry.

In case you're curious, this is one of those stories you likely won't see much anymore now that Berkeley police radio traffic is going away.

Because the suspect was a minor, there is no "paper trail" of public records where we might have learned about this later.

Earlier this week, we overheard something interesting on the radio and asked BPD about it. And they did provide quite a bit of detail for our report.

But when we don't know what to ask — there's no way to get the answers.

As far as Berkeley police radio encryption, we're still waiting to hear exactly when they will pull the plug. We don't expect it will be long.

We'll share more when we know it.

Here's wishing everyone a safe and happy Halloween weekend. And don't forget to turn back your clocks Sunday for daylight saving time!
