Authorities quickly extinguished a vegetation fire in West Berkeley's Aquatic Park on Saturday night.

Responding firefighters said the half-acre brush fire, near the animal shelter on the north side of the park, had "a slow rate of spread" as of about 7:20 p.m., according to emergency dispatches reviewed by The Scanner.

One caller told 911 the flames were 6 feet tall, while another saw 3-foot flames in a 50-by-20-foot area.

"Another says it's the size of a house," a dispatcher reported over the radio, with flames 15 feet high.

The fire was declared under control at about 7:30 p.m.

In radio traffic reviewed by The Scanner, police said the fire did not reach the animal shelter or any other building in the area.
