Three years ago, we never could have imagined what we would build together at The Berkeley Scanner.

On our third birthday, we're taking a moment to reflect.

We are proud to report that our daily email now goes to more than 10,000 people. Our site gets more than 265,000 pageviews each month.

We now have nearly 1,400 paying members. Each one is critical to our work.

Since launch in 2022, we've published more than 1,200 stories — including a growing number of guest essays and freelance contributions.

We've reported more than 100 deep dives, and are working to expand our City Hall coverage, in addition to regularly publishing scoops, breaking news and exclusive stories that other news outlets follow.

And our efforts have not gone unnoticed.

In just 1.5 years, we've won a National Headliner Award for online local news, five California Journalism Awards for news coverage and our business model, and a "Truth to Power" press freedom award for our First Amendment battle with DA Pamela Price, who was later recalled.

We want to assure you: We have no plans to slow down.

In fact, we're working to step up our efforts — with more community voices and freelance coverage, more stories each week, and perhaps even a staff position (we hope!).

If you value this work and want it to continue, please take a moment to help us celebrate today, on The Scanner's third birthday, by becoming a member now.

If you prefer, we also welcome one-time gifts of most any amount.

We also need to call out the help of a few of our main contributors: photographer Ariel Nava, who has been with us from the very beginning, and freelance writers Kate Darby Rauch and Liz Fox, who have both helped lighten the load and picked up critical subjects with care and attention.

We look forward to adding to their ranks going forward.

The Scanner would also not be what it is today without the massive support we've gotten from the broader community, in terms of membership but also news tips, documenting events we can't get to, introducing us to key sources and sharing our stories with friends and neighbors.

As a still largely one-person operation, your tips and support allow us to cover much more ground, at all hours, authoritatively and with nuance, than we otherwise could.

For all of this, we thank you. We are excited and determined to continue serving our community in the years ahead.

Your support today will ensure we can continue to bring you unmatched coverage as we head into year four together.
