TBS Today, Sept. 10

Imagine hearing a noise in your bathroom, running outside and seeing a stranger's legs sticking out from your window.

That's what happened to one local woman this week.

As many of you know, in addition to the news, we also run the business side of The Berkeley Scanner.

Overall, it's gone quite smoothly, but we still have a lot to learn.

To that end, we spent the morning at the David Brower Center with other members of the local business community attending the Berkeley Small Business Forum, picking up tips and insights about local resources and meeting a few of our fellow local founders.

After the forum, we attended an online seminar about fundraising, which planted a lot of seeds about how to keep growing the operation.

Each day is a bit of a balancing act with the two sides of The Scanner.

Last week we were in St. Louis for the Independent News Sustainability Summit, which was a truly fantastic event.

The summit included an award ceremony focused largely on business growth and operations. TBS was a finalist in the Business of the Year category (small tier), the final award of the night.

We were up against two very strong contenders, Santa Cruz Local and Oviedo Community News in Florida.

In the end, Santa Cruz Local took the prize. The 6-year-old news org has done amazing work and has built quite a team.

We're thrilled for them — and also thrilled for Cityside, which won the Operational Resilience Award (medium/large revenue tier).

It was truly an honor to be a finalist in this national contest, which recognizes some of the top local independent journalism outlets in the country.
