Update: East Bay BART service was restored at 9:30 a.m. and full service was restored at 11:45, the transit agency reports.

BART issued the following statement about the outage. It appears below in full.

This service disruption occurred due to a computer equipment problem following overnight network upgrade work. The work is part of an ongoing multi-year project to upgrade the communications and computer systems, including switches and routers, that support BART operations.
We do this work continuously during the hours we are not running. It is not a one night project.
Something related to this upgrade work triggered a problem preventing all of our communication systems to come online. We are investigating exactly what went wrong.

Original story: A system-wide "computer equipment problem" has delayed the start of BART train service Friday morning, the transit agency has announced.

The incident began at 7:20 a.m. "following network upgrade work; which is preventing the start of service this morning," according to 511.org.

"This is related to an ongoing upgrade [to] our computer network system," a BART rep told TBS on Friday morning. "We do this work continuously during the hours we are not running. It is not a one night project."

BART has advised commuters to "seek alternative means of transportation."

AC Transit also has a site devoted to bus alternatives between BART stations, including Transbay service into San Francisco.

SF Muni is also "providing mutual aid between Embarcadero and Balboa Park and County Connection is also providing mutual aid. Capitol Corridor is honoring tickets for its passengers connecting to BART during the closure."
