A man with a pending gun case, who was out of jail on his own recognizance, is back in custody this week facing new illegal firearm charges, court papers show.

Berkeley police say they found several loaded firearms, including a machine gun-style assault weapon, during a recent search of the Oakland home of 20-year-old David Hill III.

BPD secured a warrant to search Hill's home after linking him to the robbery of a Berkeley High School student during a dice game behind the post office in mid-February.

On Aug. 7, Berkeley police arrested Hill at court and searched his home, finding the loaded assault weapon, three loaded handguns and "six high-capacity magazines with over 100 rounds of live ammunition," including "assault-rifle style rounds," BPD wrote in charging papers.

Police also noted that Hill had been released on his own recognizance in a pending Alameda County gun possession case in addition to being on probation in San Mateo County.

In December 2023, the Alameda County DA's office charged Hill with three felonies, including possession of a machine gun and the manufacture or sale of a "multiburst trigger activator."

The case has yet to go to trial.

A few months later, in April 2024, Hill was convicted in San Mateo County of being an accessory to a carjacking — which also took place in December 2023, according court papers.

He remains on probation in that case, police said.

On Monday, the Alameda County district attorney's office filed a new case against Hill, charging him with several counts of possession of a firearm by a felon as well as possession of an assault weapon, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person and six counts of possession of a large-capacity magazine, according to court papers.

He has not been charged in connection with the February dice game robbery.

As of this week, he remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail with a bail of $295,000.

He was scheduled for an attorney and plea hearing Tuesday.
