A driver struck two pedestrians Friday night in downtown Berkeley, sending both to the regional trauma center.

As of publication time, Berkeley police remained at the scene investigating and the area was closed to traffic, including AC Transit.

The collision took place at Shattuck and Durant avenues shortly before 11:20 p.m., according to preliminary reports.

The involved vehicle, a black Honda, was southbound on Shattuck at the time of the crash.

Arriving firefighters found an injured woman on the ground, not moving, as a large crowd formed nearby.

A young man who had been hit could be heard screaming loudly over the radio.

Police said the driver stopped and cooperated with the investigation.

BPD assigned officers to collect witness statements and check on the conditions of the patients at Highland Hospital.

At this point, authorities said they do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing.
