A man police say pulled out a gun during a fight with his girlfriend in West Berkeley last month has been charged with two felonies, court papers show.

A witness saw the couple struggling on Seventh Street, near Allston Way, before they ended up wrestling on the ground shortly before midnight July 16, Berkeley police wrote in charging papers.

The witness told police Ashley Walker then went to his car and grabbed a gun after saying "you want to play," police wrote.

According to the witness, Walker then waved the gun around while shouting for several minutes, BPD wrote in charging papers.

Police ultimately found Walker in his vehicle and detained him.

During a subsequent search, officers located a loaded gun inside the car and confiscated it, police wrote.

The Alameda County district attorney's office ultimately charged Walker with carrying a loaded handgun, carrying a concealed handgun in a vehicle (both felonies) and domestic violence battery, a misdemeanor, according to charging papers.

On July 21, Walker — who has no permanent address — was released on his own recognizance with orders to obey all laws and avoid possession of firearms and ammunition, according to court papers.

(There was no objection as to his release terms, according to court papers.)

Walker is next set to appear in court Thursday to enter a plea.

According to department data, Berkeley police have seized 63 guns this year, including 10 unserialized "ghost" guns.

That appears largely on pace with last year, when the department confiscated 110 guns during criminal investigations and search warrant operations.

Domestic violence reports in Berkeley are also relatively flat this year, with 158 through July of this year compared to 150 over the same period in 2024.
