A new defense motion has raised serious ethical questions about whether the prosecution, under recalled DA Pamela Price, mishandled a high-profile police shooting case before being recused from it altogether due to bias.

Attorney Michael Rains, who represents former San Leandro police officer Jason Fletcher, says the prosecution failed to turn over potentially exculpatory material — which could mean trouble for the case in the future.

A man was arrested Thursday after fatally shooting a parole agent in Oakland.

The officer was identified as CDCR parole officer Joshua Lemont Byrd, a 40-year-old father of three.

"This is a heartbreaking loss," the governor's office said. "Agent Byrd served with integrity and courage — and we’re forever grateful. We are keeping his family in our prayers and we join the men and women of CDCR in mourning this tragedy."

It's the first line-of-duty loss for CDCR since 2018, according to the governor's office.

About an hour ago, reporter Henry Lee identified the suspect on X as Bryan Keith Hall, writing that he has a conviction for stabbing a man in the neck on Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland.

According to court records reviewed by The Scanner, the case was originally charged in 2022 as attempted murder but was reduced to assault with a deadly weapon in early January as part of a plea deal.
