Another reader said he saw the coroner's truck along with police cars "and a bunch of caution tape" from the back of Mechanics Bank to the old Masonic building at 865 Colusa.
(The former Masonic Temple was converted into condos in 2003, according to real estate listings.)
The Berkeley Police Department told The Scanner that police and fire personnel had been dispatched that evening to investigate a report of an unresponsive man in a driveway on Colusa.
BFD assessed the man and confirmed he had died.
"The initial investigation identified the decedent as an unhoused male in his 60-70’s," Berkeley police said. "No evidence of foul play was found at the scene."
The Alameda County coroner's office took custody of the body.
The Scanner has asked the coroner's office for additional details and will update this story if they become available.
In 2023, more than 340 people died in Alameda County while experiencing homelessness, according to the most recent county data.
