Hot off the presses: A federal judge has ordered the city of Berkeley to stop the removal of a longstanding homeless encampment on Harrison Street until at least next week.

We were about to hit publish on our story about the morning cleanup when the judge issued his ruling.

Here's what we know, including the history of serious public safety issues in the area.

“The City’s abatement shall cease immediately,” U.S. District Judge Edward Chen wrote Wednesday afternoon.

Also, we had the heartbreaking scoop this afternoon about today's fatal fire on College Avenue.

We updated the story just after publication to include other serious and deadly fires the city has seen this year.

Since Jan. 1, three women have been killed, in addition to the man who died today, many people have been displaced and the East Bay Media Center in downtown Berkeley was destroyed.
