Update: Berkeley police arrest gunfire suspect

When officers initially searched for the suspected shooter, he wasn't home. He was arrested and found with a gun Monday afternoon, BPD said.

Berkeley police have asked community members to avoid the area of Gilman and Curtis streets after a report of gunfire Monday morning.

Police sent out a Nixle alert advising people to stay out of the area shortly after 11 a.m.

Officers responded to the block sometime before 9 a.m. after a man reportedly fired a round into a neighbor's apartment, Berkeley police said.

No injuries have been reported. Police are now working to learn more.

Readers told The Scanner a news helicopter has also begun circling as the police activity continues.

Update, 12:30 p.m. Police say the incident has resolved. Roadways are open.

Update, 1:45 p.m. In a prepared statement, Berkeley police said they had responded to the 1300 block of Gilman Street on Monday shortly before 8:30 a.m. after a resident found a bullet hole in the floor of their apartment.

Responding officers found the bullet hole and "determined that the incident likely occurred the previous evening," BPD said.

When officers tried to speak with the resident believed to have fired the gun, they ultimately determined he wasn't home.

Just after 1:40 p.m., BPD confirmed no one had been hurt in the incident and said there was "no threat to public safety at this time. The investigation remains ongoing and will be forwarded to detectives for further follow-up."

Update, 4:30 p.m. Berkeley police have arrested the suspect from Monday morning's gunfire investigation.

Police said they learned the man was in the area of Gilman and Curtis streets just after 3:10 p.m. and responded to investigate.

Officers "conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle occupied by the suspect. The individual was taken into custody without incident, and a firearm was recovered."
