A man who came out of his tent to investigate a disturbance on Shattuck Avenue in North Berkeley was pepper-sprayed by a stranger Monday afternoon, authorities report.

The incident took place in the 1600 block of Shattuck Avenue between Virginia and Lincoln streets, Berkeley police said in response to a Scanner inquiry.

Authorities said the suspect — later identified as 35-year-old Ian Herzog — pepper-sprayed the other man for no apparent reason at about 3:10 p.m.

Responding officers spoke with the victim to determine what happened and then detained the suspect in the area, BPD said.

The victim was treated at the scene.

As of Tuesday, Herzog remained in custody at Santa Rita Jail on $50,000 bail, according to booking records.

He was also being held on other cases related to shoplifting and theft allegations, records show.

He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday.
