A man who groped two young women Friday at a bus stop right next to UC Berkeley is in custody this week, authorities said.

Berkeley police say 30-year-old Shan Woods (homeless) groped two women at the same bus stop on Friday evening before he was arrested nearby in the Southside neighborhood.

Police initially responded to Bancroft Way and Ellsworth Street at 5:10 p.m. on a sexual battery report, BPD said.

They learned that a man had approached a woman at the bus stop and groped her chest at about 5 p.m.

The woman pushed the stranger away but he returned a few minutes later and groped her chest again, police said. The woman ran from the area seeking a safe location.

About 10 minutes later, the same man approached a 25-year-old woman at the bus stop and grabbed her buttocks from behind, police said.

"Seeing the reaction from others at the bus stop, the suspect quickly collected his belongings and walked away," BPD said.

Officers detained Shan Woods nearby at Bancroft and Telegraph Avenue "without incident."

While they were arresting him, police also found a large knife "illegally concealed" in his pocket as well as a methamphetamine pipe, Berkeley police said.

Woods was arrested on suspicion of sexual battery as well as allegations related to the knife and meth pipe, which are all listed as misdemeanors.

As of Tuesday, he remained in custody at Santa Rita Jail with a bail of $17,500.

Woods has no other criminal cases listed in Alameda County.

He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday.
