A man who planned to sell a car in South Berkeley was instead carjacked at gunpoint Friday, authorities report.

The suspects, described as three males wearing masks, carried a large rifle and took the vehicle in broad daylight Friday evening.

The incident took place at 6:45 p.m. in the 3200 block of Adeline Street, Berkeley police said in response to a Scanner inquiry.

The seller used an online app to arrange the deal.

When the suspects arrived, they pulled out the rifle, took the car and fled before police arrived.

The victim sustained minor injuries during the carjacking, Berkeley police said.

BPD is still actively investigating the carjacking.

The suspects were identified as Maryah Bell, 18, and a 17-year-old girl, neither of whom live in Berkeley, police said.

BPD urged people to use caution when selling items online and to use care when choosing meeting points.

Busy public places and police stations are often good options, police said.

BPD urged people to bring a friend to the exchange, tell someone where they're going and look for verified users to do business with.

Carjackings spiked in Berkeley last year but have been much less common in 2024, according to BPD data.

Robberies overall are also down year-to-date compared to prior years.
