A driver struck a 53-year-old woman in West Berkeley, leaving her in critical condition with a serious head injury Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened at Seventh Street and Heinz Avenue just before 3 p.m., Berkeley police said.

The woman was in the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection when a westbound driver turning from Heinz Avenue struck her.

The pedestrian lost consciousness for several minutes, BPD said. She was taken to Highland Hospital and is now in critical condition.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, which is being handled by BPD's Fatal Accident Investigation Team.

Police put out a Nixle alert just after 3:30 p.m. telling people to avoid Seventh Street from Ashby Avenue to Pardee Street "due to a current traffic issue."

In the Nixle, Berkeley police said a vehicle crash near Seventh Street and Heinz Avenue had closed the area "and will require a detour of traffic for the next unknown timeframe."

Earlier this month, a father and toddler on a bicycle were hit by a driver at the same intersection.

Both survived but the incident drew significant community concern about traffic safety in the area.

The Scanner will share more information when it becomes available.
